EXPLORING COLOUR: collage & mixed media

The approach throughout is to encourage you to:

•  be spontaneous and intuitive

•  be experimental, play (!)

•  have a go at mixed media techniques: paint/print/papers/
layering/folding/cutting/tearing etc

•  create papers and/or images to work with/into

•  make an image/creative piece that has meaning for you

•  make use of found imagery /magazines/photographs/text/type

•  explore personal imagery – dreams, memories, personal photographs

 

Each session will be roughly:

•  5-10 min introduction to the weeks theme with artist examples as inspiration (slideshow)

•  5-10 min warm up exercise

•  1 ½ hr personal exploration with assistance/support as required

•  coffee break as needed!

Week 1: INTRODUCTION

found papers / found images

Introduction to the course: basic collage techniques, sourcing materials and the intuitive collage technique / 10 min collage /getting inspiration/slideshow of artist examples showing a variety of collage techniques

 

Week 2: COOL COLOUR/BLUES, GREENS

creating papers: introduction to acrylics & mixing colour

Focus on cool, watery colours /using acrylics – creating your own papers to incorporate in collage: layering paint, textured surfaces / inspiration: artist slideshow of layering and texture effects

 

Week 3: WARM COLOUR/REDS, PINKS, ORANGES, YELLOW

creating papers: printing and stamping

Using hot, rich colours /printing + stencilling papers to add different effects to collage / artist inspiration: collections, repeats and multiples

 

Week 4: MARK MAKING

Free-ing up /working large scale! / doodling and free-ing up / using marker pens and big brushes/artist inspiration of adding textile, threads etc
